Summer Update | July 2020

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!

Joe Marshall
July 23, 2020

Dear Trinity Families,

Welcome to the 2020–21 school year! In particular, welcome to all families new to Trinity. You and your children are joining a wonderful community.

This year, I appreciate your flexibility as dates and events are subject to change, especially as uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic continues, and federal, state, and local guidelines evolve. We are on schedule to re-open our campus and welcome back our students, beginning with back-to-school camps the week of July 27.

Pandemic Response Plan and FAQs
At the beginning of July, I emailed our Pandemic Response Plan (PRP) to families. The PRP is based on guidelines from entities such as the CDC and the Georgia Department of Public Health and can be found on the 2020–2021 School Year board in MyTrinity. We will remain responsive and adaptable and keep the following at the forefront of our continual planning: the health and safety of our community and the importance of elementary-aged children receiving in-person instruction.

We are committed to keeping our campus open to students, and I am grateful for our exceptional physical and human resources that will enable us to provide an at-school education within new health and safety guidelines. You will see how we are implementing new protocols, such as face coverings and temperature checks, and being creative with our use of space, schedules, and technology.

I am so proud of our teachers, who have shown incredible flexibility and loyalty since the pandemic began and who are eager to be with their students in person. Members of the Academic Leadership Team, myself included, have held multiple virtual meetings with faculty since the end of the year to keep them advised of the School’s campus reopening plan, to solicit feedback and ideas, and to brainstorm with their teams. We take the safety of our teachers and staff as seriously as that of our students and families and are taking their specific concerns to heart. Teachers’ input on the return process has been invaluable, and I cannot express how grateful I am that they are rising to the challenge of serving Trinity families while maintaining our new health and safety guidelines and managing the impact of the pandemic on their lives.

We recognize that through the implementation of our coordinated efforts, we can greatly reduce, not eliminate, the risk of COVID-19 transmission in our community. We strive to balance our mitigation policies with the known benefits of children experiencing in-person learning at school.

Thank you to the parents who completed our recent survey. Based on your responses, we have created an FAQ section that has been added to the bottom of the PRP.

Also based on responses to our survey, I understand that families may have uncertainties about returning to school regardless of underlying medical conditions. We want to support all families in this ever-changing landscape, and next week we will communicate our plans for distance learning while the campus is open and if the campus must close. If you are considering in-home learning options for your Kindergartner-Sixth Grader or have concerns about your child returning for on-campus learning, please reach out to your child’s division head (Rhonda Mitchell for EED and Sarah Barton Thomas for UED) as soon as possible.

Updated Procedures and Event Information
Information about updated procedures, such as drop-off and pickup, are outlined below. Also outlined below are our reimagined start-of-school events that have gone virtual for the health and safety of our community.

This year, all students will have their own electronic device. For students with health concerns, we will continue to provide remote learning if they need to stay at home. If we must revert to full virtual learning, we have refined our distance learning plans. Students will still experience the meaningful and joyful learning that is a hallmark of the Trinity Experience and will participate in developmentally appropriate schedules that are a balance of live and recorded content.

As an elementary school, Trinity’s program revolves around the following core tenet: developing in our students a strong academic and character foundation while also fostering their continued curiosity toward and engagement in school and learning. This strong cognitive and social-emotional base supports our graduates’ continued happiness and success in middle school and beyond. While looking toward the future, Trinity also never forgets to cherish the wonder of childhood and the preciousness of children’s elementary school years. To me, this balance of enjoying the present while preparing for the future is the essence of an elementary education and reinforces why it is so important that our students are on campus daily this year with their caring teachers.

In addition to our teachers who nurture and inspire your children, you, our Trinity parents, support the School in countless ways. Thank you in advance for your flexibility, can-do attitude, volunteerism, and philanthropy as we work together. It’s this ethos of possibilities that makes Trinity the exemplary place it is and will ensure the 2020–21 school year is memorable and meaningful for your children.

Enjoy your final weeks of summer as we look forward to another great school year!

Sincerely,
Joe

““Persistence and resilience only come from having been given the chance to work through difficult problems.”― Gever Tulley

    Dear Families,

We are so looking forward to our return to campus in August. Seeing our young friends will bring such joy to our hearts as we continue to provide the Trinity Experience amid the global pandemic. The can-do spirit, flexibility, and resilience shown during our distance learning period has reinforced that we are a strong community ready to take on whatever is placed before us. As you’ve seen in our Pandemic Response Plan and heard in our Return to School webinar (password: 7c?@g^!4), our leadership and faculty teams are ready to engage with students and families in ways that minimize transmission risk and maximize our program.

    Communications
One of our positive takeaways from our March–May adventure was committing to streamlined and frequent communication portals. MyTrinity will continue to be your source to view all-school announcements, resources around COVID-19, and general distance learning information. We will use Seesaw for announcements, and you can sign up to receive text message notifications. If we pivot to distance learning, either by cohort group or as a whole school, distance learning plans will be streamlined using Google Docs and Seesaw. Additionally, each week, you will receive a note from your child’s Division Head via a Seesaw notification.

    Preparing Your Child for School
It is our goal and intent to be present on our campus with students. Our current plans for grouping, scheduling, and practices for health and safety remain nimble as we receive guidance from local, state, and federal sources.

You can help your child prepare for school by normalizing the wearing of a mask for increasingly longer periods of time. Engaging with them about the way school might look different but how important it is to stay positive and focused, just like usual. Practicing activities like demonstrating what six feet of distance looks like and having conversations about not being afraid will set the tone for our teachers on August 13. More considerations for parents can be found in the “Social-Emotional Support” section of the PRP, and please reach out to us if you have any questions.

    Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Since its integration in 1963, Trinity has led the region as an independent school committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As the national conversation around racism has reached a fever pitch, we recommit to being leaders in educating children to embrace diversity and actively engage in constructing inclusive communities. To that end, we are reviewing and exploring our program and practices in conjunction with Diversity Coordinator Jackie Sears and Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management Brad Brown to identify opportunities for growth. We are thankful for the leadership of the Board of Trustees and the Trinity School Parents’ Association (TSPA) as well as our faculty and staff community for taking part in these integral conversations.

While this year will look and feel different, our core remains strong. We are committed to high-quality, multi-sensory, differentiated learning practices in a community that supports the holistic development of every child. Your partnership and direct communication with each of us will be vital to our continued success.

We wish your family health and joy in the days and weeks to come! As always, please reach out to either one of us with any questions or concerns.

    Sincerely,
    Rhonda and Sarah

    • Anyone who is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or knows that they have COVID-19 should isolate at home. In addition, parents should communicate with the School—using the methods listed below—if one of them or a member of their household tests positive for COVID-19, experiences symptoms of COVID-19, or has close contact* with someone who is positive or symptomatic of COVID-19. *CDC currently defines “close contact” as “someone who was within six feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes starting from 48 hours before illness onset until the time the patient is isolated.”
    • Parents should take their children’s temperature before arriving on campus and keep their child home if they have a temperature of 100° Fahrenheit or above. Students will also have their temperatures checked at school.
    • Parents should report student absences, COVID-19 symptoms, close contacts, and COVID-19 diagnoses via studentout@trinityatl.org.
  • + Morning Drop-Off

    • For the health and safety of our community, drivers need to remain in cars and not park and walk up to or through the carpool area, including the dismissal table. This year, parents will not be able to walk their child into their classroom.
    • During the first two weeks of school, a classroom teacher from each of the Early Learners and Pre-K classes will be at carpool to assist apprehensive little ones at their cars and walk them to their new classroom.
    • Drop-off begins at 7:30 AM for both Early Elementary Division and Upper Elementary Division students. Trinity’s school day begins promptly at 8:05 AM for all students.
    • If you are late for morning drop-off when teachers are no longer at the curb, you must park your car in the parent lot and walk your child into the building to sign him or her in at Reception.
    • Students will have their temperature checked each morning.
  • + Early Morning Drop-Off

Trinity offers early morning drop-off from 7:15 to 7:30 AM Monday through Friday throughout the school year. Students can be dropped off in the carpool line where a faculty member will be present. Registration is not required.
  • + Dismissal Times

    • Early Learners: 12:30 PM Monday–Friday
    • Pre-K and Kindergarten: 2 PM Monday–Friday
    • First Grade through Sixth Grade: 3 PM Monday–Thursday, and 2 PM on Friday
  • + Carpool Changes and School-Pass

    • Trinity utilizes School-Pass, an automated carpool system, to notify teachers of your arrival for pickup.
    • Parents are responsible for making adjustments to carpool dismissal through the School-Pass app. More information about School-Pass, including how to download the app, can be found on the School-Pass board in MyTrinity.
    • Parents must notify the School by updating information in School-Pass if their child is not going home in his or her normal carpool at the regular dismissal time. Parents should communicate all carpool changes through School-Pass by 11:45 AM for Early Learners and 1 PM for all other students. In addition to updating information in School-Pass, please be sure to notify your carpool driver of any change in routine.
    • For more information, please contact Reginald Haley, Director of Operations, at rhaley@trinityatl.org or 404-240-2279.
  • + Carpool Rules and Safety Measures General

    • For the health and safety of our community, drivers need to remain in cars and not park and walk up to or through the carpool area, including the dismissal table.
    • Cell phone use is prohibited in the carpool lane. In accordance with Georgia’s Hands-Free Driving Law, effective July 1, 2018, refrain from using a cell phone, earphones, or other electronic device that can distract one’s attention from people and vehicles. Teachers and staff have been instructed to ask drivers to put cell phones away when dropping off or picking up children in the carpool lane.
    • A traffic control officer will be on duty in the carpool line each morning from 7:30 to 8:05 AM and at the 3 PM and 4 PM carpools to ensure safety for our parents and students. It is essential that all drivers follow the traffic control officer’s instructions at all times.
    • Car trunks and hatchbacks may not be opened in the carpool line.
  • + Arrival

    • All students must be dropped off via the carpool lane.
    • Faculty and staff will be on hand to open car doors. Do not let Early Elementary Division students out of the car until a teacher or staff member opens the car door.
    • Please make sure children’s seatbelts remain fastened until the car has come to a complete stop in the carpool line. Parents or students must unfasten seat belts and car seat buckles.
    • Faculty will be dismissed a few minutes prior to the start of school to be in class to start the day. Once faculty members are gone, parents must park and walk their children to Reception.
    • Sixth Graders and cars carrying four or more Trinity students may use the Visitor Lot for Morning Carpool.
  • + Dismissal

    • For the health and safety of our community, this year drivers need to remain in cars and not park and walk up to or through the carpool area, including the dismissal table.
    • Please be on time to pick up your child. Teachers often have obligations immediately following dismissal. Faculty and staff are not available to supervise late pickups. Students who are not picked up by the end of carpool will be sent to Extended Programs where applicable drop-in fees will be charged.
    • Remain in your car in the carpool line until students are placed in the car by the teachers on duty.
    • When picking up during afternoon carpool, please do not exit your car to assist with car seats or seat belts. Instead, pull into the visitors lot or park along the side of the main driveway to buckle belts.
    • Car trunks and hatchbacks may not be opened in the carpool line.
  • + Bookbag Considerations

    • Each student in Early Learners and Pre-K classes should bring his or her blue and white Trinity bookbag clearly marked with his or her name on the outside. All new Early Learners and Pre-K students have received a Trinity bookbag as a part of their welcome to the School.
    • Older students (Kindergarten–Sixth) who are more responsible for their personal belongings may want to use a backpack or another type of bookbag that is comfortable for them. It is strongly recommended that Kindergarten through Fourth Grade students use a backpack and not a rolling bookbag because of space concerns in the classrooms.
  • + Food During School

    Morning Snack

    • All classes have a daily snack time. We ask that you send a nutritious snack in easily opened containers. A few options are fresh vegetables, fruits, cheese sticks, and whole-wheat crackers. Low nutritional items such as chips and cookies are discouraged; candy is prohibited. Students should bring a reusable water bottle with their name labeled. No other drinks are permitted unless part of a Trinity School Nurse-approved dietary plan.
    • Early Elementary Division students should bring their snack in a container with the student’s name clearly visible on the outside.
    • Trinity School’s Food, Sugar, and Allergy Policy is available in the Parent Handbook (which is always linked in the Parent Resources board in MyTrinity) and includes the responsibilities of parents, students, and the School. All parents should review this policy both in terms of your child’s allergies as well as for procedures pertaining to other students’ allergies. Teachers will inform parents of serious food allergies in each classroom.

    Lunch

    • Pre-K–Sixth Grade students and those Early Learner students who stay for Lunch Bunch (Extended Programs) are provided their choice of a hot lunch and/or a sandwich. This year, lunch will be delivered to students in classrooms.
    • Weekly menus from the School’s food service provider Flik are available on the Flik board in MyTrinity. No lunches should be brought from home. The School provides water, milk, and juice.
    • This year, parents and special guests will not be able to have lunch on-campus with their child.

    Special Occasions

    • We understand the importance of celebrations in the lives of elementary-aged students, and we are reenvisioning how celebrations will be held this year.

Trinity School Parents' Association

List of 1 items.

  • + A Note from TSPA President Zenobia Goldschalk

    Sarah and Rhonda
    Dear Parents,

I hope you are safe and well, spending time with family and friends as circumstances allow this summer. As the new school year approaches, Trinity faculty, staff, and parent leaders have been busy preparing for the return of students. While the upcoming school year may not look exactly the same as it has in the past, the Trinity community looks forward to welcoming all families, new and returning, and continuing to affirm that all students, faculty, staff, and families are known and loved. There is much to look forward to in the coming year, and we will learn and flourish together by sharing our experiences, listening, and celebrating each other’s differences.

I am honored to serve as President of the Trinity School Parents’ Association (TSPA) this year. In this role, I look forward to working with TSPA’s parent leaders, including the TSPA Council, Grade Level Representatives (GLRs), TSPA Committee Chairs, and Room Parents. These volunteers serve in numerous roles, and perhaps most critically during times of uncertainty, they serve as a resource and communication channel for all parents.

GLRs and Room Parents are available to you throughout the school year, and I encourage you to get to know them. GLRs serve as a link between you, TSPA, the administration, and the Board of Trustees. They are available to you for school-related issues, questions, comments, or concerns, which will always be handled with discretion. Room Parents will connect you to your child’s class and teachers and can assist with classroom-specific questions. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your GLR or Room Parent, or to any of the TSPA leadership throughout the year.

In addition, one of Trinity’s strongest assets is the community’s proactive volunteerism and the many ways our parents offer their time, talents, and energy in support of Trinity’s students, faculty, and staff. While volunteering this school year will look different, there will be opportunities to volunteer in various forms throughout the school year.

I hope you enjoy these last few weeks of summer. I look forward to seeing you soon!

    Best Regards,
    Zenobia

  • + A Note About Parent Volunteerism

Trinity faculty and staff love our parents volunteers and are grateful for your eagerness to assist with the various programs and events held every year. You, our parents, are important and appreciated members of our community.

As we reimagine how events must occur under new health and safety guidelines, volunteer opportunities will look different this year. We appreciate your understanding as we know how many of you look forward to supporting the School through your time and talents.

Grand Day

List of 1 items.

  • + Grand Day | April 16

Grand Day is a very special tradition at Trinity. It is one that our children look forward to each year, a day when grandparents or special friends are invited into the classrooms to spend time with students. This year’s event will be held in the spring on Friday, April 16, as a health precaution because of COVID-19. The event typically begins with a Welcome Reception for all guests, followed by classroom visits. We will communicate any changes to families as the situation evolves.

Linked below is a Grandparent Information Form for your completion. Grand Day invitations will be sent to grandparents and special friends based on the information you provide on this form. A special friend may be invited to Grand Day only if no Grandparents are able to attend. If you wish to have a special friend invited to Grand Day, please feel free to indicate the name of the individual that you would like to invite. In order for Grands to receive all information on time, please complete the linked form below by Thursday, August 20. If you have any questions, please contact Grand Day 2020–21 Chair Katie Kirtley at kbkirtley@gmail.com or Director of Spotlight on Art and Special Events Leisy Ruddock.

Completion of this form will also enable the School to involve grandparents in the Trinity Community. Grandparents will be added to Trinity’s mailing list to receive our major publications and invitations to participate in the full spectrum of school life. As email is our primary form of communication, please consider including current email addresses for your parents. If your parents do not wish to receive any correspondence from the School, please contact Leisy Ruddock.

We look forward to seeing you in the fall and making Grand Day a memorable occasion for your child and their Grands!

Please click here to fill out the Grandparent Information Form by August 20.
